What is ophthalmology?

This is an area of medicine which deals with diseases and injuries of the eye. It is a wide ranging field which includes the anatomical structure of the eye, its function, diseases and the various forms of treatment.

What is an ophthalmologist?

This is a medical professional who is trained in eye and vision disorders. They can deal with the full range of eye care, from eye tests and glasses to correct defective vision through to complex forms of eye surgery.

What does an ophthalmologist do?

He or she diagnoses and treats all manner of eye complaints. He/she will be involved in preventative care and may also undertake eye research.

Many ophthalmologists specialise in a particular area such as glaucoma, cornea transplants, laser eye surgery or neuro-ophthalmology.

An ophthalmologist undertakes medical training as per normal followed a minimum of three years training in ophthalmology.

Some choose oculoplastic surgery which includes a range of procedures to treat problems with the eye socket, tear ducts, eyelids and face. It can also involve reconstructive work on the eye following an accident or injury.

Examples of procedures include:

  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Orbital fracture
  • Tumour removal from around the eye
  • Eyelid reconstruction
  • Tear duct repair
