Sleeve Gastrectomy

This is a relative newcomer in the field of obesity surgery but one that is gaining in popularity. It is considered a good alternative to gastric bypass.

This procedure also falls into the ‘restrictive’ category.

It can be performed as a single technique – sleeve gastrectomy only or, as a double or ‘two stage’ procedure in that it involves a duodenal switch.

What is a sleeve gastrectomy?

This is the name given to a straightforward procedure in which a small portion of the stomach is stapled together to form a slim tube or ‘sleeve’ – hence the name. The remainder of the stomach is then removed. This reduces the stomach to 20% capacity.

It is classed as restrictive in that food intake is reduced however, food is absorbed as normal. This means that the patient does not have to rely on daily nutritional supplementation.

It is often followed by either a gastric bypass or duodenal switch, usually a year after this procedure. However, many patients have found that the single stage technique is sufficient on its own in regard to weight loss and that they do not require a bypass or a switch. It is usually performed as laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

It is a suitable procedure for those patients who are classed as severely obese.
