Nipple Reduction Surgery

Nipple reduction surgery is a cosmetic procedure used to decrease the size of the nipple, though it may also include reshaping of the nipple in order to create a better-proportioned nipple.  The procedure is most commonly requested by women who feel self-conscious or otherwise embarrassed by the size of their nipples.

Understanding Nipple Reduction Surgery

Nipple reduction surgery involves making small incisions in the nipple in order to remove excess tissue.  In some cases, local anesthesia is used to numb the area when performing the procedure, though general anesthesia may be used as well.  For most women, the procedure takes only about one hour to complete and is generally considered to be an outpatient procedure.  In addition, most patients fully recover from the procedure within just a couple weeks.

Risks Associated with Nipple Reduction Surgery

Just as with any form of cosmetic surgery, there are certain risks associated with nipple reduction surgery.  Some of these include:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Swelling

Other potential risks associated with nipple reduction surgery include:

  • Asymmetrical results, meaning the nipples do not match in size or shape following the surgery
  • Feeling unhappy with the results because too much or not enough tissue was removed
  • Loss of ability to breast feed, though this complication is rare and should not occur unless the ducts are cut
  • Loss of sensation in the nipple or breast area

When compared to other cosmetic surgery procedures, nipple reduction is a relatively simple process with few risks.  Nonetheless, it is important to discuss the risks with your doctor and to be certain you are fully aware of these risks before moving forward with the procedure.
