What are the differences between Macrolane and a breast implant?

There are a few differences between the two which include:

  • Breast implant surgery is an invasive form of treatment which is performed under a general anaesthesia. Macrolane is performed using a local anaesthesia which means minimal scarring and a faster recovery.
  • It is also a more subtle form of enhancement in which the breasts increase by one cup size which is very difficult to do with surgery. Breast implant surgery is ideally suited to those women who want bigger breasts (more than 1 cup size) or who have badly drooping breasts.
  • Macrolane is a compound based upon hyaluronic acid which is naturally produced by the body. This can be injected into the body without any side effects. A breast implant is made from an artificial material‚ for example silicone‚ which can be perceived as a foreign invader by the body. And one way the body deals with this ‘foreign invader’ is by forming scar tissue around the implant. This is known as capsular contraction. Note: there have been reports about the risk of capsular contraction and Macrolane but only a tiny percentage of patients have experienced this (around 3%).

Women who have Macrolane worry that they might not be able to breastfeed properly but this isn’t usually a problem. The injection takes place underneath the mammary gland which shouldn’t affect the ability to breastfeed.
