Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is designed to improve the overall appearance of the skin.  It is most commonly used to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles around areas such as the eyes, mouth and cheeks.  In addition, laser skin resurfacing helps to improve the overall texture of skin and may be used to remove blemishes, including acne scars and the appearance of sun damaged skin.  The procedure may be performed on its own or it may be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts or eyelid surgeries.

Understanding Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing removes blemishes and fine wrinkles by removing the top layer of the skin.  By removing this skin, the more youthful and attractive skin beneath is exposed.  The procedure is typically used to remove wrinkles and blemishes found on the face.  Some of the most common wrinkles and blemishes that are addressed through laser skin resurfacing include:

  • Acne scars
  • Deep laugh lines
  • Frown creases
  • Lines around the mouth
  • Surgical scars

In order to complete the procedure, a laser beam is used to vaporize the top layers of the skin.  With these layers removed, the skin is able to regenerate in a smoother manner.  As a result, the skin appears softer and contains fewer wrinkles.  Although there is some discomfort associated with the procedure, most patients feel it is quite tolerable and compare it to the way a rubber band feels when it snaps against the skin.  In addition, depending upon the size of the area being treated, the procedure may take only a few seconds to complete.  When covering a large area, however, it can take a couple of hours to complete a laser skin resurfacing procedure.

Risks Associated with Laser Skin Resurfacing

The risks associated with laser skin resurfacing are quite minimal because the procedure is not invasive and does not require the use of anesthesia.  Nonetheless, some of the negative side effects that may be experienced following a laser skin resurfacing procedure include:

  • Altered skin pigmentation
  • Redness
  • Swelling

In all cases, the side effects are temporary.  In addition, redness and altered skin pigmentation can be easily covered up with the help of makeup
